[Spoiler Review] Anime 'Frieren: Beyond Journey's End' Season 2 Episode 32 (Season 2 Episode 4) "Someone's Homeland"
On February 6, 2026, the highly popular "date episode" from the original manga aired. The slightly green atmosphere of two young people, Frieren's watchful gaze, and the fierce battles in the Northern Plateau in the second half. The balance of stillness and action was pleasant, leaving a quiet sense of satisfaction after viewing.
Overall Review: An Episode Where Circling "Feelings" Color a Harsh Journey
This episode truly embodied the "layering of time" that defines Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.
In the first half's date portion, the clumsy Stark and the anxious Fern's interactions were heartwarming. The depiction of "searching for a cat" with Himmel, likely an anime-original addition, was portrayed as a deeply emotional scene where Frieren seems to understand the nuances of Fern's heart through Himmel's words and actions.
Heiter, Eisen, and Himmel. The teachings of their former companions have become guiding principles for the two young ones today... It was a time to savor the natural beauty of this inheritance.
Episode 32
The story begins with an unusually restless Fern. Worrying about what to wear on the date, she asks Frieren for her opinion, but Frieren responds disinterestedly, "Don't they all look the same?" Fern's way of venting her frustration by braiding Frieren's hair into pigtails was a comical and adorable touch. These everyday moments convey a sense of calm — like the lull before the harsh journey ahead.
On the date, Stark seems unconfident and somewhat gloomy. Whether he realizes it or not, it's endearing to see him becoming conscious of Fern as a woman. Fern, on the other hand, grows anxious that Stark keeps talking about Frieren, worrying "maybe he's not interested in me." She went out of her way to wear unfamiliar, hard-to-walk-in "stylish shoes" to look her best, yet Stark keeps focusing on food. The way their feelings subtly miss each other was a frustrating yet precious sight.
At dusk, the two gaze at the beautiful town scenery. There, Fern voices her nagging feeling: "That was somehow unlike you, Stark." Stark confesses that he actually had Frieren plan the date course. She felt a bit disappointed, but upon learning that it was the result of him desperately trying to think of something for her sake, Fern seems relieved and returns to her usual demeanor. Their conversation picks up, and it becomes a heartwarming moment.
Afterward, seeing Fern looking content while soaking in the hot spring, Frieren recalls a time when she and Himmel searched for a cat together. "Even if things don't go as expected, it's fine as long as the process is enjoyable. That alone can put someone in a good mood" — from those words Himmel once said, Frieren may have realized that today's date was an enjoyable one. Fern and Stark watched the same sunset that she and Himmel once saw. The direction that conveyed this sense of overlapping time was wonderful.
The second half includes scenes reconfirming the impressive abilities of Fern, now a first-class mage, as the party enters the Northern Plateau — a den of monsters. After repeated fierce battles that made them fear for their lives, they arrive at a certain settlement where Stark questions, "Is there really a need to live in such a dangerous place?" The villager's reply was heavy: "Who could ever abandon their homeland?"
The fierce battles continue. Facing a powerful enemy that shatters even defensive magic, Stark sacrifices himself to secure victory for the three of them. Battered and bruised, he grumbles, "Maybe we should have taken the sea route after all," but Frieren recalls the words Himmel once said when she posed the same question: "I want to protect others' homelands too."
"There are plenty of people whose homeland is the Northern Plateau," Frieren says, as faces of people they've met throughout their journey flash by. The path Himmel walked was not merely a road to defeat the Demon King, but a path to protect each and every "precious place" where someone lives, one at a time. The addition of a flashback scene featuring Stark's brother Stoltz deepened the weight of these words. Stark renews his resolve.
The episode closes with Stark's legs giving out, and Fern and Frieren discussing the need to be more conscious of their coordination as a party.
Predictions for Next Episode
The next episode is titled "Northern Plateau Logistics."
It seems it will be an episode focusing on the wisdom and pride of people maintaining the foundations of life in such a harsh environment. Considering the flow of the original story, we'll likely see transport teams carrying supplies along treacherous mountain paths and the hardships of the guards protecting them.
Having reaffirmed the meaning of "protecting someone's homeland" this episode, Frieren and her party will likely find themselves working to protect the "logistics" that support daily life. What situation could possibly lead to "We have no choice but to buy back Lady Frieren"? We can probably look forward to a comical scene typical of Frieren, where she gets herself pawned off during the harsh journey. How the battle against the severe natural environment blends with laugh-out-loud everyday moments — I'm looking forward to the next broadcast.
