[Spoiler Review] Anime 'Jujutsu Kaisen' Season 3 Episode 51 (Episode 4) "Carrying Reeds"
Aired January 22, 2026. Tonight, we witnessed one of the most cruel yet breathtakingly beautiful "awakenings" in all of Jujutsu Kaisen. The answer that twin sisters Maki and Mai arrived at left me unable to move long after the broadcast ended.
Overall Impression: The Soul-Stirring Performances of Mikako Komatsu and Marina Inoue Weaving a "Cry Born from Hell"
Episode 51, "Carrying Reeds." In a word, this was a "flawless masterpiece." Within the darkness of the Zenin clan, the very symbol of the jujutsu world's corruption, Maki who strove to remain noble despite all the abuse, and Mai who cursed herself out of love for her sister. The depiction of their shared mindscape was dreamlike yet filled with a grief that tears the heart apart.
MAPPA's direction was extraordinary. The speed of the scene where the awakened Maki overwhelms her father Ogi, and the audio design that deliberately suppresses the BGM to emphasize the "sound of cutting flesh," reveals a fierce obsession from the production team.
Episode 51
The story begins with a desperate situation: Maki, who went to the clan's cursed warehouse to retrieve cursed tools, is ambushed by her father, Ogi Zenin. Already there is Mai, gravely wounded by Ogi's hand.
- The cold cruelty of Ogi demonstrating his overwhelming superiority
- The truth behind the twins' "incompleteness" revealed in a seaside mindscape
- "I'll take everything with me. So you... destroy everything."
The scene where Mai takes on all of Maki's "curse," sacrificing her own life to forge a single blade. Marina Inoue's final lines, somehow serene yet sounding as though she's coughing up blood, left me in tears. In exchange for Mai's disappearance, Maki achieves her full completion as a "Heavenly Restriction" vessel.
The aura radiating from the awakened Maki is identical to that of Toji Fushiguro. The moment of silence before her father Ogi, his face contorted with fear as he mutters "It's just my imagination" to himself, and then his head flying from his shoulders.
With the dying wish "Destroy everything" in her heart and a blood-soaked blade in hand, the figure of Maki walking forward is no longer that of a hero of justice, but a "god of destruction" come to end the massive curse that is the Zenin clan.
